Objective

I had the opportunity to develop a large-scale, visually engaging communication tool for REI’s sales team. The objective was to create a durable, high-impact printed poster that would foster an ongoing sense of accountability and encourage growth by providing clear visibility into key team metrics, company values, and employee performance. The poster serves as a dynamic, educational resource, ensuring that all team members are aligned with REI’s mission and culture while also tracking sales goals, departmental achievements, and the best practices for customer service and internal collaboration.

The goal was to create an engaging, easy-to-understand visual space where sales metrics such as sales goals, shrink goals, team results, and departmental performance could be easily accessed, along with valuable information on how to serve clients and treat fellow employees. The design had to align with REI's outdoorsy, active brand identity, making the poster both functional and visually appealing to the team.

Solution

The solution is a versatile 5x4-foot Communication Centre, crafted from durable, matte-finish polypropylene and placed in high-traffic areas like break or meeting rooms. This sturdy base features placeholders for interchangeable, quarterly-updated posters, allowing easy updates with tape that can be applied and removed without damage.

The communication centre is divided into four key sections:

  1. Main Educational Poster: Positioned prominently, this eye-catching area is updated quarterly and covers a range of retail sales topics to enhance team knowledge and skills.
  2. Team and Department Stats: This section is dedicated to tracking sales goals, shrink reduction targets, and departmental performance. It’s designed to give team members a clear view of their achievements and areas for improvement.
  3. Company Values & Employee Engagement: This area reinforces REI's core values, customer service practices, and internal culture guidelines. By emphasizing how team members should interact with both customers and each other, it helps build a strong, positive workplace culture.
  4. Store Events Tracker: This space logs notable store events, including loss prevention activities (like items that went missing), as well as successful sales (such as popular items that sold out). This section keeps the team informed about the store's day-to-day happenings and celebrates good news.

Each section is organized for maximum clarity, ensuring the poster is easy to read and engaging at a glance. The design aligns with REI's outdoorsy brand aesthetic, using natural colors, textures, and imagery to make the educational content approachable and motivational. This poster system is not only a tool for tracking metrics but also a dynamic focal point that fosters continuous learning and team spirit within the workplace.
